VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY! Volunteers needed tomorrow to pot up tree seedlings!
FCF is looking for volunteers to help pot up bare root tree seedlings at our Base of Operations from 1pm to 3pm this Friday (May 19th). We have hundreds of seedlings that need to be potted up before they are used in our future afforestation projects!
Please email us at comms@foretcapitaleforest.ca to let us know you are interested to help! Volunteers do not need to come for the whole time, all are welcome to come help for as long or as little as they like within the indicated time frame.
If you are not able to attend, we will have many other opportunities this planting season to help with local afforestation efforts.
Tiny Forest biodiversity study has begun!
If you’ve walked past our Tiny Forest Demonstration Plots you may have noticed a few weird tents. No, we’re not camping here…they are malaise traps that are a part of a biodiversity study. We are partnering with a team from the University of Guelph to study the change in biodiversity resulting from our Tiny Forest Demonstration Plots.
Malaise traps are used to collect pollinators and other insects to measure the change in biodiversity. In addition, we are taking soil samples from our plots to measure the increased biodiversity of soil microbes using eDNA technology.
Our hunch is that biodiversity is thriving… But stay tuned for the scientific findings from this study!

Thank you to all the volunteers who came to help us plant fruiting shrubs along our foraging pathway! The afternoon flew by resulting in more than 50 elderberry, raspberry, and blackberry shrubs planted!
Keep an eye out for these shrubs in bloom along our foraging pathway!
Don’t fret as we will have many other opportunities to get involved this season.

Last week Forêt Capitale Forest was invited to speak at the Synapcity Tree Canopy Session at Just Food Community Farm. It was a wonderful evening to discuss important topics related to growing and protecting Ottawa’s tree canopy. We want to thank all who attended and participated in the wonderful discussions!
