Happy Giving Tuesday! A day when global generosity makes an impactful difference for many worthy causes. Today we are beginning our “12 Days of Afforestation – Growing Ottawa’s Urban Forest Canopy”. During this time we are seeking donations to fund our 2023 afforestation mission. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
We begin our campaign by identifying the important difference between the terms afforestation and reforestation. Afforestation and reforestation are often used synonymously, however, they describe very different forms of forestry practices. Reforestation is the process of planting trees in a section of forest that recently had tree cover. It is common for reforestation to occur after deforestation. Afforestation on the other hand is when new trees are planted or seeds are sown in an area where there has not been any recent tree cover. This process creates a new forest where a forest would have stood many years ago. This is an important type of forestry practice in regions that have been deforested over a hundred years ago, as is the case in Ottawa.
Our mission is to create new forests in the Ottawa area, meaning that we practice afforestation in an urban setting. You are able to help us fund this mission by donating to our fundraising page. All the funds collected will be used to support our 2023 afforestation projects!
